Struggling to read a menu or the directions of a cold medicine, fill in a simple form, or interpret the map. Did you know that 14 percent of American adults function at below basic literacy skills?
Our volunteers help adults with reading, comprehension, writing, and basic math skills. They also work with foreign-born students who need to learn English as a second language.

Please help be part of the literacy solution:
- 30 million Americans over age 16 cannot read a newspaper or fill out a simple job application. (National Assessment of Adult Literacy)
- One in seven American adults possess below basic literacy skills. (National Assessment of Adult Literacy)
- 11 million adults in America are non-literate in English. (National Assessment of Adult Literacy)
- 20 percent of American adults do not have a high school diploma. This increases to 21% in Maryland, and 22% in St. Mary’s County. (U.S. Census)
- A child who grows up in a home with at least one illiterate parent is twice as likely to be illiterate. (ProLiteracy America)
- The single most important factor influencing a child’s early educational success and achievement is an introduction to books and reading at home prior to beginning school. (U.S. Department of Education)
